The Center for Disease Control (CDC) ALProHEALTH grant to Alabama Extension seeks to reduce the state’s high obesity rate and improve health through healthier nutrition and physical activity. This grant has brought over $100,000 in grant funds to Bibb County, which is one of only 14 Alabama counties receiving these grant funds. The funds have been used by the Bibb County Extension Office during the past three years to purchase playground and exercise equipment, provide information and promotional signage for parks and walking tracks, offer educational programs and walking events emphasizing exercise and healthy nutrition, and healthy food display shelving and containers for local retail outlets.
As the grant enters a fourth and final year focusing on a physical activity guide, healthy food guide, technical assistance for food banks and other sustainable projects, this slideshow takes a look at some of the environmental improvements during Years 1-3 that have improved access to physical activity and healthier nutrition in Bibb County. If you do not see a particular improvement—and there are others not featured here—please contact us so we can take a photo and include it on our website, social media, and in another edition of our e-newsletter.
Bibb County 4-H was well-represented on the Alabama 4-H Livestock Quizbowl team that placed fifth recently at the AKSARBEN 4-H Invitational Quizbowl Competition.
A composite team of youth from Bibb, Lauderdale and Tuscaloosa counties represented Alabama at the Grand Island, NE. contest. In addition, Bibb County 4-H club member Josie Chance was the second-high individual for the contest.
