Mayor Daniel Sims Has West Blocton On The Move

Although it is currently among the least developed of the sites on the Bibb County Parks and Trails Guide at www.aces.edu/movemore,  Mayor Daniel Sims, Town Councilor Chris McMinn and other town leaders and volunteers have big plans and dreams for West Blocton Town Park https://movemore.aces.edu/bibb/activity/8. Just prior to and during Memorial Day weekend, several good things happened toward that goal.

First, on Thursday, May 24, Mayor Sims received weed trimmers, chainsaws, glyphosate and weed control sprayers from the Bibb County ALProHEALTH Coalition and Bibb County Extension Office through the Center for Disease Control (CDC) ALProHEALTH grant to Alabama Extension.  Those items will be used to remove unwanted trees and vegetation to clean up West Blocton Town Park.

Also, on that very same day, Sims and Bibb County Extension Coordinator Matt Hartzell met at West Blocton Town Park with Roben Duncan, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Lincoln in Talladega County.  Duncan graciously drove to West Blocton, heard from Mayor Sims about the Master Plan he is working on for the Town Park, and provided some ideas, suggestions, and insights for a paved walking track, lighting, pavilion, restrooms, baseball fields, basketball courts and other improvements being considered.

Finally, Mayor Sims hosted the “Walk With Mayor Sims” at West Blocton Town Park Saturday morning, May 26 as part of the Bibb County 100 Mile Mayors’ Challenge Walking Series of community walks in each of the four Bibb County municipalities.  The Mayors’ Walking Challenge and series have been organized by Extension agent Christina LeVert in Human Nutrition, Diet, and Health.  Thirty (30) persons participated in this event which included a one-mile walk at the Park led by Mayor Sims, and inflatables for the youth in attendance.  Fifteen (15) additional participants were signed up for the Challenge, which brings to 300 the number of Bibb County residents now participating in it.   And now, more people than before know where the Town Park is located!

It is not too late to sign up for Mayors’ Walking Challenge!  You can still do so at https://mayorschallenge.challengerunner.com/GroupPage.aspx   For more information about West Blocton Town Park and the Town’s plans for it, contact Town Hall at 205-938-7622.
