Bibb County Extension Coordinator Matt Hartzell and Family and Consumer Sciences Regional Extension Agent Sallie Hooker delivered the Alabama Extension 4-H BeSAFE anti-bullying program in August to 115 5th Grade students at West Blocton Middle School (WBMS). BeSAFE is a research-based program that has been proven to reduce bullying at WBMS any many other schools throughout Alabama and the U.S. Through role playing and hands-on activities, BeSAFE helps youth to define bullying, learn about the different types of bullying, become an ally to other youth who are being bullied, and most importantly, resist and stop bullying through positive peer pressure exerted by youth individually and in groups. Hartzell and Hooker will also present this program in September to the 5th graders at Centreville Middle School.

Forty-six (46) Bibb County youth participated in our 3rd Annual 4-H Bibb County Summer Day Camp held July 10-13, 2017. There were two separate two-day sessions—Session 1 on July 10-11 and Session 2 on July 12-13. Program activities were based at Bibb County High School (BCHS) and field trips were taken to several locations in Bibb County. Youth participants painted art on canvas, harvested vegetables from the BCHS garden, learned about the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge, the Cahaba River and its aquatic life, received information about healthy water and refreshments, saw and made pottery at Miller Pottery, volunteered at Helping Horses Alabama, and enjoyed a hike and swim at Brierfield Ironworks Historical State Park.
We at the Bibb County Extension Office would like to thank the 4-H youth participants, their parents and families, Bibb County 4-H Volunteers Courtney Lambert, Tessa Mayfield and Roger Brothers, Bibb County Master Gardener Volunteers Michelle Giddens and Sharon Hope, Bibb County High School staff, and the Cahaba River Society for making the 2017 Bibb County 4-H Summer Day Camp so fantastic!
