Farm ponds serve many purposes including watering livestock, irrigation for vegetable and fruit crops and providing recreational fishing opportunities.
Farm ponds must be properly managed to achieve goals such as increasing the number of large bass, successful stocking of catfish in a bass/bream pond and controlling weeds. An unmanaged pond may soon become more of a problem rather than an asset. Aquatic weed management will usually be necessary if ponds are not maintained properly.
Publications and other information on proper pond management or recreational fishing may be obtained at local Extension offices, the ACES Recreational Fishing & Pond Management website, or you may attend a Recreational Farm Pond Management program scheduled this summer in Blount County.
When it comes to farm ponds “catch and fry” may be better than “catch and release” if you want bigger bass!
