Colbert County is located in the northwestern corner of Alabama and covers 589 square miles. It is bordered by the Tennessee River on the north, Franklin County on the south, Lawrence County on the east and Mississippi on the west. The population is 54,428. The nonwhite population makes up 17 percent of the population.

Agriculture brings more than $60 million to the county each year. Major sustainable ag commodties are poultry production, cotton, corn, soybeans and beef cattle. Other ag programs include forestry and the urban/rural horticulture industry.

The Colbert County Extension Office has two full-time agents, one regional extension agent, one full-time and one part-time multi-county urban agents. The county staff plans and implements programs that are enhanced through cooperation with 13 Regional Extension Agents. The county staff continues to enhance family well-being programs such as prostate cancer awareness, water quality, indoor air quality and food safety. Current 4-H and Youth Development programs are offered in both rural and urban settings. Four-H clubs are conducted in the county school system and two city school systems. A countywide club also is offered to youth who are unable to take advantage of an organized school program.
