Dear Extension Friends,
Can you believe we have almost completed another year? If you are like me, your summer has been so busy and now fall is right here. I am more than ever ready for some fall crisp air, hot chocolate, S’mores, beautiful leaves and most of all good venison! I certainly hope this hunting season is lucky for all.
Aside for all the fall excitement, my heart is touched by the loss of Mr. August J. Lehe on September 22, 2016. Mr. Lehe and I, first became friends when I was a Regional Extension Agent with ACES. He worked for the Veteran’s Affairs Office for Talladega and Coosa Counties for several years. I too had those same two counties as a Regional Agent and was fairly new to the Alabama Cooperative Extension System.

A Caregivers Support Group (a training program for adults who provide care for family members or others with serious illness or disabilities) will be held on October 11, October 18, October 25, and November 1, 2016, from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at the Coosa County Extension Office, 13999 AL Highway 22 (behind Courthouse), Rockford, Alabama. The Central Alabama Forestry Field Day will be held on Thursday, October 20, 2016, at Rolling Mountain Plantation in Coosa County. Mark your calendar for an informative and enjoyable day in the woods. Knowledgeable speakers will discuss helpful woodland signage, the many benefits of prescribed fire, removing understory with a small mulcher, why folks in central Alabama may need to say no to shortleaf pine and the latest on Wild Turkey research being conducted in Alabama and learn how turkeys are captured with cannon nets. Vendors will be on site with displays, products, and educational information. Earn 2 hours of CFEs. There is no cost for the tour, but pre-registration is required by October 14. The Coosa County 4-H Chick Chain Show and Auction will be held on October 15, 2016, at the Coosa County Cattlemen’s Barn (across from the Hanover Fire Department on Highway 231). The show will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the auction immediately following the show. This show and auction will serve as the culmination of our 4-Hers hard work and dedication in caring for their chicks and keeping up-to-date records. Everyone is invited to come out and support our youth!
Learn “What Agriculture Has To Offer You In Coosa County”!
Come join the Coosa County ALProHealth Coalition on September 27, 2016, as they tour Rora Valley Farm and Eagles Roost Herb Farm In Coosa County.
The tour bus for the trip will pick up at 8:30 a.m. from Rockford Baptist Church, 9575 US Highway 231, Rockford, AL and will travel to Rora Valley Farms in Hanover Community, Eagles Roost Herb Farm in Hissop Community, and return to Rockford Baptist Church around 2:00 p.m.
Tour topics will include information on: Natural Vegetable Production, Composting, No-Till Production, Planting, Pest Management, Herbs, etc.
The tour is free but pre-registration is required by Thursday, September 22, 2016. Seating is limited to 33 participants. Call the Coosa County Extension Office at 256-377-4713 to reserve your seat.
Please bring a sack lunch. Beverages will be provided.

Rockford Market Day will be held every 1st Friday April through October from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Items to be sold include: vegetables, fruits, home baked goods, jewelry, t-shirts, crafts, woodworking items, flowers, fresh and dried herbs, honey, canned preserved fruits, jam, jellies, plants in containers, soap and body care products such as essential oils, and other items. Vendor applications are now being accepted. For more information call the Coosa County Extension Office at 256-377-4713. Vendor space is free, but limited.
The Coosa County Chick Chain Project is once again underway. Thirteen 4-H youth have taken on the task of raising hens for 20 weeks. The 4-H project culminates with a Chicken show and auction on October 15th at the Coosa County Cattlemen’s barn. We hope all Coosa County residents will join us at the show and auction to support our youth for a job well done! Further details on show times will be announced soon.
