A grant was awarded to the Dallas County Extension Office from the Environmental Protection Agency-Healthy Homes Dallas County. This project will address the need for education to homeowners and renters in Dallas County. The goal is to promote healthy homes and address issues related to lead poisoning, asthma, other chronic lung diseases, and allergies (dust, cockroach,vermin).
The project will feature a two-day education/training for participants. The recruitment and training of Home Assessors will work under the supervision of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System-Dallas County Office to assess and maximize the impact of education and small low-cost remediation projects for those who participate.

SNAP-ED ADULTS PROGRAM in Dallas and Perry Counties focus on Health and Wellness, teaching families how to make healthy food choices, food safety, how to be a smart food shopper, and saving their food dollars. Nutrition Education Program (NEP) educators use approved recipes from the Federal Food Guidance, currently MYPLATE. SNAP-ED’s primary target audience is food assistance recipients. The goal of the NEP program is to promote healthy dietary patterns and regular physical activity among individuals, families, and communities.

The BodyQuest Food of the Warriors program works hard to prevent childhood obesity in Dallas and Perry counties. Through the SNAP-ED program, 3rd graders are engaged for 17 weeks in classes, taught by SNAP-ED educators. The goals are to increase fruit & vegetable consumption and physical activity, to improve sleep, hygiene and enhance family environments.
Eating Smart, Being Active focuses on enjoying healthy foods, preparation of healthy snacks and quick meals, eating healthy on a budget and changing eating and physical activity habits to adopt a healthy lifestyle. The six week series promotes gradual changes-one step at a time, and encourages changes the whole family can embrace to become healthier. Moreover, Eating Smart, Being Active has become a favorite program among the Motherly Care participants. Eating smart and being Active participants are eager to learn different healthy cooking styles as well as learning how to make their food dollars stretch.
Catch Kids Club – Catch stands for Coordinated Approach to Child Health and is a school and after-school program: it includes three lesson levels: Jump into Health – Kindergarten; Taking Off- 4th Grades, and CATCH Kids Club- 5th through 8th Grade.
Today’s Mom teaches moms-to-be to have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies. In conjunction with diet, physical activity can help them have a more comfortable pregnancy and easier delivery. Today’s Mom aims to improve the dietary and physical activity habits of mom-to be during the series of six lessons.
Power to Prevent Diabetes is a program designed to encourage persons at increased risk for diabetes to lose weight and prevent or delay the disease. The program presents nutrition and physical activity health tips and suggests activities that are simple and fun.
The program consists of six weekly sessions. More time may be required for some of the sessions, depending on the participants’ interests. Participants are encouraged to bring family members or friends to the sessions to support healthy lifestyle behaviors for everyone.
Diabetes Support Group Meetings are held each month and involves a time of sharing and problem solving, an educational program, and a recipe sampling of a diabetic friendly dish.
