Farming 101


The Alabama Cooperative Extension System is offering a course for new and transitioning farmers titled “Farming 101”. Interested participants will receive valuable information on a variety of topics and other resources. The cost of the entire session is $80 or select session(s) of your choice for $10 each. Materials and refreshments are included. Classes are held every other Tuesday at the Central Alabama Farmer’s Co-op in Selma from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Listed below are the dates, topics, and speakers:

2/27- Livestock Management– small scale beef production, sheep & goats, poultry & rabbits- Ken Kelly & Joe Hess

3/13- Farm Management– land value & leasing, taxes, farm financial planning- Ken Kelly, Perry Woodruff, and John Wilburn

3/27- Fruit Productions– strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, grapes, citrus, persimmons, figs, pomegranates- James Miles

4/10- Beekeeping– Jack Rowe

4/24- Protected Production– greenhouse, high tunnels, hydroponics- Jeremy Pickens

5/15- Vegetable Production- James Miles

5/29- Certifications, Regulations, Resources, Restrictions– GAP/Produce Safety, pesticide licenses, grower permits, organics- James Miles

6/12- Value Added Products– baked goods/cottage food law, jams/jellies- Janice Hall
