2018 Pig Squeal Show and Auction
This Saturday, May 5th, the 2018 Pig Squeal Show and Auction will take place at the DeKalb County VFW Fairgrounds. Everyone is welcome to come watch the show, and more than welcome to bid on the pigs and support our local 4-H youth who have worked so hard to complete this project.
What is it?
The 4-H Pig Squeal project is designed to teach 4-H members recommended management practices for growing and raising swine. The participation in this project helps them:
- Develop swine management skills
- Learn to produce healthy hogs
- Develop an awareness of business management
- Develop record keeping skills (income and expenses)
- Realize the pride of accomplishment
How the Pig Squeal project works:
At the first of January, the 4-H student will receive 2 feeder pigs that are approximately 60 days old. They all come from a reputable nursery and will be properly vaccinated. The youth then raises these pigs for around 120 days before bringing at least one pig back for the show and auction, with the option to bring the second pig or keep it for themselves.
What role do I play?
The best way possible to help with this project is to come and bid on a pig, the winner of the bid will not have to take possession of the live animal, but you can if you choose to. If you win the bid on a pig you will select your package (what cut of meats you want) and the pig will be sent directly to the processor. If you do not want to pay for an entire pig, you can always bring a friend who will split the cost and the meat with you! The 4-H students will receive a portion of the auction proceeds, and also have several opportunities to win prize money. There is nothing better than seeing the pride on these kids faces at their accomplishments and when people are bidding over the pigs that they have raised.
Not interested in obtaining any pork, but still want to help out? We GLADLY accept donations, no amount is too small!
