About Escambia County

Escambia County is located in the southern part of the state and lies on the northern boundary of Florida. It is bordered by Monroe, Conecuh, Covington and Baldwin counties. The county seat was originally located at Pollard, but in 1880, it was transferred to Brewton, which was named in honor of William Troupe Brewton, a great-nephew of the first settler of the area. Other towns and communities include Atmore and Flomaton.

There are 20 educational outlets in the county including seven elementary schools, five middle schools, four high schools, one technical school, two private schools and one two-year college. About 60 percent of the county population has at least a high school education, and 7.6 percent has some college education.

Cotton is the major agricultural crop. Corn, soybeans, peanuts and stocker cattle also are raised. Timber is the major industry. Major tourist attractions include public lakes, hunting areas, Creek Bingo Palace, Blueberry Festival, Smith’s Station Day and Conecuh National Forest.

The Escambia County Extension Office has seven full-time and 17 part-time employees and about 20 volunteers who help with Extension programs. Some of the popular Extension programs are EFNEP, Master Gardener, Master Cattle Producer, PET, GCFAA and sustainable agriculture. About 350 youth are involved in 4-H.
