Knowing your family’s health history can be important in making health decisions. Some cancers have been found to have a genetic link. Many people have heard of BRCA1 and BRCA2 – genes that are associated with breast cancer — but did you know there are other identified genes for other cancers?
Dr. Nancy Merner of Auburn University and her research team travel all over the state of Alabama to meet and educate individuals and families about cancer risk, specifically regarding breast, ovarian, and prostate cancer. Being a geneticist, she teaches about genetic risk factors and the importance of acknowledging your family history.
On September 21st Dr. Merner and her team will be coming to Etowah County. She will speak at the Etowah County Extension Office auditorium from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. The public is invited to attend. For more information contact Donna Shanklin, Regional Extension Agent Human Nutrition, Diet & Health. She can be reached at 256-737-9386 or 256-200-2997
