4-H Tech Tuesdays

Explore the world of robotics, computers, rockets, and Maker with 4-H! Tech Tuesdays is a rotating schedule of Robotics Club, Computer Science Club, and Rocket Club – on Tuesdays! Well, most of the time anyway.

Once a quarter or so, we’ll have a “Maker” Tuesday, where 4-H’ers can use various materials and methods to create something from their imagination and engineering skills. The Tech Tuesday clubs will meet at the Lauderdale Extension/4-H Office except for special events and service opportunities.

Tech Tuesdays – Robotics

  • Robotics I (1st or 2nd year) 4:00 – 6:00 pm
  • Robotics II (3+ years) 6:00 – 8:00 pm

September 19 (rescheduled due to weather on 9/12), October 7 (Saturday – volunteer at BEST event), October 10, November 14, January 9, February 13, March 6

February 24 – participate in UNA Robotics event

March 8 – showcase projects at regional STEM event

April 26 – showcase projects at County Round-Up

What kind of fun robot project will the 4-H’ers build and program at Robotics Club next? Will it be drag car races? crazy lawnmowers? an obstacle course challenge? Join us as we learn more about programming and engineering using Lego Mindstorm NXT and EV3 Robot kits. Members also work on projects preparing for a Regional STEM competition in March 2018.

Tech Tuesdays – Computer Science, 4:00 – 6:00 pm

March 8 – showcase projects at regional STEM event

April 26 – showcase projects at County Round-Up

Computer science gives youth a foundation of creativity, problem solving, and computer skills. Our new Computer Science Club is sponsored by Google – yes! Google! – and will explore the principals of computer programming through both “unplugged” activities and online activities from CS First and using MIT’s Scratch software.  The fun will have a different theme each month… animation, art, fashion, friends, gaming, music, sports… members can join any time!

Tech Tuesdays – Rockets (7th grade and up), times to be scheduled

November 28, January 23, February 27, March 6; attendance at 3 quarterly UNA workshops also required (schedule to be announced by UNA)

March 8 – showcase projects at 4-H regional STEM event

March – compete in UNA competition (schedule to be announced by UNA)

April 26 – showcase projects at County Round-Up

Participants will explore their interest in the science behind rocket flight, then use that knowledge to design and build a model rocket – without using a kit! What size body tube? What shape fins, and how many?  How will the payload return to Earth safely? The group project will be entered in UNA’s Rocketry Challenge. Members must join at the first meeting to participate in the program.

Tech Tuesdays – Maker Fun, 4:00 – 6:00 pm

February 6, April 10

March 8 – help with Maker exhibit at 4-H regional STEM event

April 26 – showcase projects at County Round-Up

A Maker is someone who makes stuff: robots, crafts, furniture, art, or electronic gadgets. At Tech Tuesday – Maker sessions, participants will figure out how to make or do stuff on their own through creating, building, and sharing.
