Farming 101 – RUSSELL COUNTY

Small scale fruit and vegetables, high tunnel production, IPM, farm management and more!  Come join the Alabama Extension staff along with experts from across Alabama for an interactive training on vegetable production, small business marketing, pest management, and much, much, more.  Build for farmers, open to everyone.  Training will be held on December 5, December 12, December 19, January 9, January 16, January 23, January 30, February 6, February 13, February 20 and February 27 from 3:00 pm until 5:00 pm EST at the Russell County Extension Office, 508 14th Street, Phenix City, AL  36867.  Class fee a la carte is $10.00 per session.  All classes is $100.00, including materials and refreshments.  Topics to be covered are:

December 5 – Livestock Management – Small scale beef production, sheep and goats – Josh Elmore

December 12 – Introduction to Beekeeping – Paul Berry

December 19 – Farm management:  Budgets and cash flow – Jessica Kelton

January 9 – Large fruit production – Chip East

Good Dog!

Join Alabama 4-H for a six week dog training program for youth 12 – 18 years old (9 – 11 allowed with parental involvement) with trainers from Harvard K-9. The cost of the course is $35 per person (NO cost for informational meeting). The cost will cover training classes, project manual, dog show, t-shirt, and prizes. The class is open for 15 total spots, and youth and parent are required to attend a meeting on October 5 at the Russell County Extension Office, 508 14th Street, Phenix City, AL 36867 from 5:30 – 6:30 pm EST to qualify for a spot (no dogs at the first meeting). Spots will be determined based on the first 15 to return all paperwork and course fees to the Russell County Extension Office. The class will meet every Friday starting October 20 and ending December 1 from 6:30 – 7:30 pm EST at Harvard K-9. You must pre-register for the October 5th meeting by calling 334-298-6845.

Farming 101: For Beginning Farmers – BARBOUR COUNTY

The Alabama Cooperative Extension System is hosting a series for small, beginning, or transitioning farmers.  The course will offer 6 classes which will be held every Tuesday and Thursday starting January 9, 2018 and running through January 25, 2018 at the Barbour County Extension Office, 525 School Street, Eufaula, AL  36027 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm CST.  The course dates and topics are as follows:  January 9 – Basic Soils, Farm Management & Financial Planning, January 11 – Small Scale Vegetable Production, January 16 – Vegetable Insect Pests Management, January 18 – Tunnel House Production, January 23 – Small Fruit Production, and January 25 – Beekeeping, Marketing & Value Added Products.  Pre-Registration is required by January 5th and the cost for the entire course is $50.  Call 334-687-5688 for more information or to register for the course.  We look forward to seeing you soon!!

Food Myths

GMO, Genetically Engineered, Bio Technology – What does it all mean?  Come join Alabama Extension professionals, researchers, and specialists from Auburn University and Alabama A&M University as we uncover the truth with non-based & research-based information.  This meeting will be held Thursday, August 10, 2017 from 5:30 until 7:30 pm EST at the Martin-Idle Hour Park Community Center, 3743 Moon Lake Dr, Phenix City, AL  36867.  This is a free program but you must register by August 10th.  Please call the Russell County Extension Office at 334-298-6845 to register and for more information.

Paint Me 4-H

Have you ever wanted to learn to paint?  If so then join us for a Summer Painting Class for youth ages 9 to 18!  You will be able to choose from a variety of projects to paint on canvas and take with you.  Please call the Russell County Extension office at 334-298-6845 to get your name on the list.

4-H Summer Sewing Clinic

Have you ever thought how cool it would be to learn to use a sewing machine?  Or how much fun it would be to make your own pillow or clothes?

If so join us for a Summer Sewing Clinic for youth, ages 12 to 18, on Wednesday, July 19 from 8:30 am until 12:00 pm EST at the Russell County Extension Office, 508 14th Street, Phenix City, AL.

Cost of the clinic is $5 and must be paid by July 14 to reserve your spot.

The Right Bite Diabetes Cooking School

Register now for the Right Bite Diabetes Cooking School.  Learn to prepare delicious meals and snacks to control or prevent diabetes or other diseases.  During six exciting lessons you will learn:

  • To choose healthier food at the store
  • Prepare recipes lower in fat, cholesterol, sugar and sodium
  • Control portions

The school will be held July 20 and 27, and August 3, 10, 17, and 24, 2017 at 5:30 pm EST at Summerville Baptist Church, 3500 Summerville Rd, Phenix City, AL at 10:30 am EST.  This is a 6 class course.  Each session will feature healthy recipes that the that the audience will be able to taste.  Each person, upon completion of the school, will receive copies of the recipes and handouts that will help them start new healthy habits at home.  Each client will also receive a certificate of completion.

Total cost for the school is $10.00.

2017 Russell County Farmers Market

Do you love fresh fruits and vegetables?  If so, join us for the 2017 Russell County Farmers Market.  Kick off will be Thursday, May 25 from 1:00 pm until 6:00 pm at the parking lot of Garrett Harrison Stadium.  We are excited to announce that we will have two locations for this year’s market.  You may purchase from 8:00 am until 12:00 noon ET each Saturday from local vendors beside the Chattahoochee Brewing Company on 13th Street or each Thursday from 2:00 pm to 6pm in the parking lot of Garrett-Harrison Stadium.  This is your opportunity to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables straight from the farmers.  Point of contact for the 2017 Russell County Farmers Market is Mrs. Jennifer Davidson, Russell County Extension Coordinator.  For more information, please call 334-298-6845 or come by our office at 508 14th Street in Phenix City.

Worker Protection Standard Train-The-Trainer Meeting

On Tuesday, March 14th, the Extension System will be conducting a Worker Protection Standard Train-The-Trainer Meeting. The purpose of this event is to train those who wish to train their own workers and handlers.  If you have a commercial or private applicator license, you are already qualified to train; however, by attending this event you will receive the training materials.  You will also have the opportunity to ask questions. This event is not intended to train workers or handlers.  It is strictly to train trainers. Lunch will be served. There is no registration fee for this training, but pre-registration is required. To register, call the Macon County Extension Office, 334-727-0340 by Friday, March 10th. The meeting will begin at 9:00 a.m. CST and will end around 2:00 p.m CST. The meeting will be held at the E.V. Smith Research Center located at 4725 County Road 40 in Shorter, Al.
