Food Myths

GMO, Genetically Engineered, Bio Technology – What does it all mean?  Come join Alabama Extension professionals, researchers, and specialists from Auburn University and Alabama A&M University as we uncover the truth with non-based & research-based information.  This meeting will be held Thursday, August 10, 2017 from 5:30 until 7:30 pm EST at the Martin-Idle Hour Park Community Center, 3743 Moon Lake Dr, Phenix City, AL  36867.  This is a free program but you must register by August 10th.  Please call the Russell County Extension Office at 334-298-6845 to register and for more information.

The Right Bite Diabetes Cooking School

Register now for the Right Bite Diabetes Cooking School.  Learn to prepare delicious meals and snacks to control or prevent diabetes or other diseases.  During six exciting lessons you will learn:

  • To choose healthier food at the store
  • Prepare recipes lower in fat, cholesterol, sugar and sodium
  • Control portions

The school will be held July 20 and 27, and August 3, 10, 17, and 24, 2017 at 5:30 pm EST at Summerville Baptist Church, 3500 Summerville Rd, Phenix City, AL at 10:30 am EST.  This is a 6 class course.  Each session will feature healthy recipes that the that the audience will be able to taste.  Each person, upon completion of the school, will receive copies of the recipes and handouts that will help them start new healthy habits at home.  Each client will also receive a certificate of completion.

Total cost for the school is $10.00.

Senior citizens grew up in an era when trusting and being trustworthy were normal behavior.  Unfortunately, because of this mind-set today, they may fall victim to unscrupulous people through various forms of fraud.

4-H Cookies With Santa!

Do you hate waiting in the long lines to see Santa just to get 30 seconds to tell him what you want and pay $25 or more for a photo?

Well Russell County 4-H has a great news!  Come to our office December 13th from 5 to 7 pm est and get to visit, eat cookies, make ornaments, and have your photo taken with Santa himself!!!  For a $5 donation to Russell County 4-H, you get to spend lots of time with Santa and get as many photos as your parents want to take.  We hope you will join us for this magical night!  Call the office (334) 298-6845 for more information.

September 2016 County Contest is Open!

September 2016 county contest is the Photography Contest.  The World I See and The World I Imagine are 2 separate contests and rules can be found by clicking on each contest.  Entries will be due at the October Club Meetings or to the County Extension Office by October 31st at noon.  No late entries will be excepted.  If your not a current member of 4-H…that’s OK!  You can sign up online before you turn your entry in to the office!

Holiday Hazards: Fight Back Against Identity Theft, Scams and Fraud

A study by AARP stated that 1 in 5 Americans reported being a victim of a major consumer fraud or swindle at some point.  Join Alabama Extension Regional Agent, Cynthia T. White, Family Resource Management & Workforce Development, for this 2-hour workshop on protecting your resources and identity throughout this holiday season.  The workshop will be held October 25, 2016 at the Russell County Extension Office, 508 14th Street, Phenix City, AL  36867, from 10am to Noon, EST.  Pre-registration is preferred.  There is no charge for this program.  Refreshments will be provided by the Lee-Russell Council of Governments.  For more information or to register please call 334-298-6845.

4-H Summer Cooking School “From Field to Table”

Russell and Barbour County 4-H is teaming up with Georgia 4-H to provide a Summer Cooking School.  Come learn where your food comes from and how to prepare fun and delicious recipes. From chicken and eggs to veggies and fruit, 4-H members will have a great time cooking, tasting, and learning!

When:  July 19-22, 2016

Time: 12:00 est – 5 pm

Where: Columbus Consolidated Government Annex

Who: 4th, 5th, and 6th graders

Registration Fee: $25

Alabama Cottage Food Law Training

Do you bake or make wonderful jams and jellies and wondered how you could sell these goodies? The Alabama Cottage Food Law went into effect on June 1, 2014 and allows you to make certain products and sell them directly to the consumer. However, there are certain requirements that must be met to ensure you are in compliance with the Alabama Department of Public Health.
A two-hour training will be held February 23, 2016 at the Russell County Extension office at 508 14th Street in Phenix City. The training set up by Alabama Extension will begin at 10 A.M. EDT. This training meets the ADPH requirements. Upon completion of the approved food safety course and passage of the approved exam, clients will receive certification which last for five years. To continue operation, clients must maintain certification.
