Come join Alabama Extension professionals, researchers, and specialists from Auburn University and Alabama A&M University as we uncover the truth with non-biased & research-based information.
This seminar will be held on Monday, October 16, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the Moody City Hall, 670 Park Avenue, Moody, AL. Cost to attend is $5/person and you must call the St. Clair County Extension office at 205-338-9416 to pre-register no later than October 12th. A light meal will be provided.
Consumer concern and confusion over hormones, antibiotics, genetically modified (GM) foods, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have been fueled by conflicting and untrue reports about the use, regulation, and safety of these products. GM foods and GMOs can be especially confusing because they are shrouded in a cloud of unfamiliar science. As a result, a lot of popular online information is often misinterpreted or completely fabricated.
The agriculture and food industries are the primary users of these products and with oversight and regulation by government agencies like the United States Department of Agriculture, including the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Environmental Protection Agency, these products have been tested and determined safe for public introduction and use. With more products being developed and potentially introduced, consumers need to determine what is fact or fiction, and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System—Alabama Extension or ACES—is helping them to do just that!
Through this Food Myths Program Lecture Series, Alabama Extension has been on the forefront of educating consumers about the food they eat. The Food Myths Program Lecture Series was introduced in 2015 and is conducted with staff from the Alabama Extension’s Animal Science & Forages and Home Grounds, Gardens & Home Pests Teams. The concept for these lectures began with the hope of educating Alabama Extension staff about what’s really happening in regard to food. Now the scope has expanded beyond the walls of Extension to consumers seeking answers to the very same questions.
On the lecture roster is Dr. Lisa Kriese-Anderson, Extension specialist and associate professor in animal science and forages; Dr. Joseph Hess, Extension specialist and poultry science professor; Regional Extension Agent Alex Tigue who delivers education in the area of animal science and forages; Dr. Rudy Pacumbaba, an Extension horticulturist; and Janet Johnson and Angela Treadaway, Regional Extension Agents in the area of Food Safety and Quality. Each lecturer focuses on a specific topic, so when consumers leave the lecture, they have a broader understanding of what GM foods and GMOs are and how they affect our food supply. Most of the consumer questions stem from GMOs and animals.
