Everyone with Diabetes Counts Initiative – FREE Classes

diabetes-1-e1433363032932

Under contract with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS), atom Alliance will be offering free diabetes education classes in Alabama. You can receive eight hours of diabetes self-management training in your community. These classes are designed to:

  • Educate on how to best control blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels;
  • Empower you to establish relationships with your primary care provider;
  • Encourage better nutrition and regular exercise;
  • Encourage lifestyle changes that lead to the reduction in the number of diabetes complications ( heart disease, blindness, nerve damage, etc.) and limb amputations; and
  • Express the importance of developing support networks of family, friends, and existing community-based social services.

These six (6) classes present information in simple medical terms and concepts using props and pictures in a way that is conducive to better understanding and make learning fun. The classes are 60- 90 minutes long.

If you have diabetes or pre-diabetes, we invite you to contact us for more information; or if you are an organization that wishes to become a community partner and provide a location for diabetes education.

Body Quest, Food of the Warrior

bodyquest

bodyquest-studentsThird graders at Southview Elementary, Skyland Elementary and Central Elementary are engaged in the 17-weekly Body Quest classes with SNAP-Ed & 4-H educators using a battery of interactive, colorful and anime’-style materials. To promote fruits and vegetables, youth participate in weekly Warrior Tastings where they taste a variety of crunchy fresh produce. Youth are surprised that these foods, especially vegetables, taste good.

To make physical activity jazzy, Warrior Workouts are taught with a fruit and vegetable twist. Sleep hygiene and family engagement also are promoted. It can be as simple as avoiding certain foods before bedtime and taking a walk with your family.

A group of animated characters, the Body Quest Warriors, are leading the fight to prevent childhood obesity. Created by Alabama Cooperative Extension System professionals, the animé-style warriors do battle in a state-of-the-art campaign employing the latest technology, the Apple iPad app. The warriors challenge elementary youth to develop healthy behaviors (eating, physical activity, sleep hygiene, and family involvement) through this novel technology.
