Junior Master Gardener Club

Explore the fun of growing your own food! The Junior Master Gardener (JMG) Club will do hands-on projects and activities to learn about garden plants, flowers, insects, the environment, leadership, and life skills. We will also plant, maintain, and harvest two raised garden beds in the Florence/Lauderdale Community Garden.

Body Quest

body-questThe goal of Nutrition Education Program (NEP) is that through evidenced-based education food assistance participants will improve the likelihood of making healthy food choices within a limited budget and choosing physically active lifestyles. One innovative and effective way nutrition education is offered is through Body Quest: Food of the Warrior.

Lindsey Class vegetable tastings Body Quest is an exciting, interactive nutrition education program for third-graders developed by Alabama Extension at Auburn University. It all started with one simple research question: How do we get kids to eat more fruits and vegetables? Eating fruits and vegetables is a healthy and positive way to reduce the risk of obesity, a big issue for the state of Alabama.

Body Quest education includes 15 weeks of classroom instruction about good nutrition, physical activity and getting enough sleep. Students in Body Quest participate in several vegetable tastings over the course of the program as they learn to enjoy healthy foods. The “wow factor” for students is the iPad apps. Body Quest educators bring 25 iPads to each classroom for students to use during class. Students learn about good nutrition as they play educational games. Each app features the colorful and strong Body Quest Warriors that get their superpowers from eating healthy foods.

Currently, Body Quest has been taught in Lauderdale County Schools and YMCA Summer Food Service Program. Target audience for Body Quest is 3rd grade students in schools with free/reduced lunch rates or %50 or higher.
